There's a brick wall between Samuel Hutchings, b.13Nov1761, New Jersey;d. 30Dec1830, NYC, and his ancestors. His life from 1784 (Oath as Freeman of NYC) to his death is well documented. He was (in no particular order) a cartman, grocer, 1798 FDNY fireman, street inspector, assessor, was part of Crane&Hutchings, a small group of manure collectors/sellers, money collector for NYC, and fathered 13 children. Among his children are James, Charlotte, Harriet, Richard, Stephen B., Samuel, Edward W., William, Ann, to name a few. His wife was Lois Whitehead (1767-1825), whom I know much about. It is only Samuel Hutchings who is stumping me. I would appreciate any help as this search is taking me many months of some dead ends. A "story" is that he enlisted in the army during the Am. Revolution and was held a captive by the British in the Dutch Reformed Church. I can find no verification of the story, however, a Lt. John Hutchin, NJ 2nd Reg't is a possibility. Thank you....
